We all know beauty comes from within. We also know that there are tons of products out there – in the form of creams, ointments and powders- to help “supplement” that inner beauty. But the truth is, the best thing for your looks doesn’t come in a bottle. Health and beauty are inextricably tied and when you take care of yourself, it shows! Here are some inexpensive healthy lifestyle choices that can benefit you in the beauty department:
Get enough sleep
You’ve definitely heard a phrase or two about “beauty sleep.” Turns out, it’s no joke. Getting between seven and nine hours of shut-eye each night has been shown to result in fewer wrinkles, a glowing complexion, brighter eyes and even more voluminous hair. The best part? It’s free!
Cut down on sugar
I know, this one’s a little less fun. Unfortunately, the negative impact of this tasty ingredient extends beyond love handles. Too much sugar can cause wrinkles, saggy skin and even acne. Instead, try incorporating more healthy fats, like omega-3s, into your diet. The fatty acids found in certain kinds of fish, nuts and seeds can do wonders for your skin as well as your health!
Take a vacation. Get a massage. Talk to a therapist. Do whatever it takes to get those stress levels down. Too much stress not only poses severe dangers to your health, but can also take a serious toll on your appearance, causing under-eye bags, dry skin, thinning hair and, of course, worry lines! No one lives without stress, but finding some peace on the inside may go a long way for what you’re strutting on the outside.
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month so there’s no better time to remind you to protect your skin from the sun, which is beneficial for your health and your appearance. Though you might think you look good with a tan, you definitely won’t appreciate the long-term effects of too much sun exposure: dry, leathery skin, age spots, discolorations and – you guessed it – wrinkles! If you’re really craving darker skin, your best bet is using sunless tanning cream or visiting a salon for a spray-on tan.
There are, of course, many more product-free ways you can bolster your appearance, but here’s a general rule: what’s good for your health is probably great for your looks. Mother Nature knows what she’s doing!
