After almost a year and half of not being able to summon up the strength and willpower to exercise, I am finally taking back control of my body and getting back in shape! My son Noam, my fifth child, is unbelievably almost a year old. Before this pregnancy, I exercised almost every single day, but somewhere in my seventh month I really could have taken the place of the ball myself and I just stopped working out.
Fast forward a year and a half and I am working on building up my stamina again – can anyone say gym membership? I like the elliptical machine and doing cardio, but my stomach muscles are another story. I really do want that stomach bulge to vanish without a trace, but, for me, crunches and body sculpting require more effort and motivation than I can muster some days.
Concentrating for now on losing weight, I started spinning twice a week. And no, I don’t mean turning around in circles like my 7-year old daughter does for fun J For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure, spinning is a class where you ride an exercise bike together with a whole room of people, guided by an instructor. I find that this class setting is much more motivating then just going it alone. The instructor pushes you much harder than you could possible push yourself. She directs your ride: start slow, sprint, climb up a hill, ride off a cliff…well not the last one, but you get the picture. The classes are set to music, which is great. The days that 80’s music is played I am able to get lost in music and lose track of time until, suddenly, we’re cooling down at the end of our ride.
Getting back in shape is no easy task and in addition to exercise, I have also joined a diet group. In my first week, I was successful in losing 2.86 pounds. Yes, yes, yes! This initial loss right off the bat was exactly what I needed to push me to be more mindful of what I eat. I have about 15 pounds to lose to reach my goal.
Gym, spin, diet…my getting back in shape & weight loss journey continues! I would love to hear your inspirational stories.
