How running can strengthen bones, increase endorphins and improve overall cardiovascular health.
Starting regular running training can be a challenge, especially if you live in a region that suffers from harsh winters. There are ways around it and ways to keep a steady routine, but that’s not what this blog is about. Instead, we’d like to focus here on the incredible benefits you can reap from running, as a source of inspiration to get started and to keep going.
Regular running or jogging offers incredible health benefits. Running can:
- Help to build strong bones
Running is a weight-bearing exercise. Whether you run with weights, or are just carrying your own bodyweight (running offers a chance for your body to “lift weights” by your own actions of removing yourself from the ground step by step.) Weight bearing exercises are a key way to build strong bones, strengthening you not just in the present, but for many years to come. According to Runner’s World, “For runners, the weight-bearing bones of the legs, pelvis and spine tend to be stronger than the same bones in inactive people.”
2. Strengthen muscles
It goes without saying that running strengthens and tones your legs and glutes. But it doesn’t end there. Running with basic arm movement exercises your arms as well, and running also engages your core muscles. In their article on running fitness, Livestrong.com describes how running is an incredible package workout that gives your whole body a boost, including one more muscle…
3. Improve cardiovascular fitness
The heart. The cardio workout you recieve from running (with proper training and care of course) does wonders for heart health and stamina. Heart.org speaks to the effectiveness of running for cardiovascular health, as well as the benefits of our next item on the list–
4. Getting out of the house
Beyond its most immediate health benefits, running out of doors is a great way to take in some sunshine and vitamin D. In addition, even if you’re headed to a gym for your running workout, the act of getting out of the house to get in a good day’s exercise gives a boost to your mental health. A great way to doubly benefit from running is to get a running buddy to both encourage you to stay on track as well as keep conversation alive while you’re running. Only do this if it will encourage you though. It’s best to know yourself: Some people benefit greatly from the company while others thrive with peace and quiet and perhaps a good playlist or podcast to keep them company.
5. Burn plenty of calories
With running being such an all-inclusive body workout, it’s no wonder that it burns calories into oblivion. On average, a person burns 100 calories for every mile of running. But this is only an average–the more you weigh the more calories you’ll burn, and if you are still getting into the swing of running and don’t yet have it down to a science, the extra effort involved burns extra calories too. This is one of the things that makes running an incredibly beginner-friendly exercise. Here is a nifty calculator to help you figure out how many calories you burn in a run, from our friends at Runner’s World.
6. Increase endorphins
Running naturally releases endorphins, a chemical the body releases that is linked to better moods and a happier state of being. Endorphins also affect our mental health, putting us in a better and more optimistic, driven, and inspired frame of mind. They are the cause of the “runner’s high” and this is why a runner could go for a ten kilometer race and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated instead of worn out. But don’t worry–you don’t need to run ten kilometers to enjoy this effect.; running for as little as ten minutes is enough to enjoy a rush, according to a study done by YouGov.
