“Dying young isn’t cool either…” These words, though a bit harsh, were the words that our dermatologist berated my 13 year old daughter with this morning.
My daughter came into the doctor’s office today with a complaint of itchy skin and thankfully it turned out to be just a case of dry skin. However, while looking at my daughter’s back, the doctor commented that her back already has sun damage and asked my daughter why she has not been wearing a sun protective swim shirt.
The doctor knows me and what I do (co-founder of HydroChic) and so she knows that my daughter has complete access to any modest sun protective shirt she wants. Of course, as the mom, I chimed in and shared that my daughter doesn’t think our tops are cool enough.
“Why is the shirt so important?” my daughter asked. “Because,” explained the doctor, “most people don’t see the skin cancers that grow on their backs. They get missed too easily and then the cancer spreads and can be deadly. That is why you should wear a sun protective swim shirt.”
In the car on the way home, my daughter sat quietly. Later she told me that she was thinking about which shirt she wanted from the HydroChic 2017 collection… sometimes the best advice comes from an outsider.
