March is Women’s History month, where we have a chance to focus on the lives of strong female role models, so that we and our daughters can learn from them.
Right here, at HydroChic, we have two great role models – Daniella Teutsch and Sara Wolf, the founders of HydroChic Sun Protective Active Wear. Who are the women behind HydroChic?
Sara and Daniella met more than a decade ago, working as sales reps for a small millinery company. Sara has a Masters degree in History and was a history teacher at the time; Daniella has a Masters in Special Education and was working as a supervisor for student teachers. They became friends and found that they had much in common, including a love of water and sport. They both lamented the fact that there was no sufficient swimming attire for women seeking more coverage and wanted to be comfortable when swimming. And so HydroChic was born.
Without much business knowledge but with lots of enthusiasm, Daniella and Sara threw themselves into the project. Using their experiences from the hat company and some mentors from their family, they began applying the analytical and research skills they had gained from their college studies to opening their own business. They worked long hours; Saturday nights and weekends became a memory from the distant past. They made mistakes, learned and moved on. Mostly, they attribute their success to daring, “We jumped in. We had the audacity to do things that many small companies may not do, like showing our first few samples at high end industry fairs”, says Sara.
From the first time they took HydroChic products out into the real world, they knew that they were on to a winner. “Our products are items that we know we want to wear”, explains Daniella. “We are women, designing for women. Every detail of every product is very well thought out”. HydroChic is based on the premise that only a woman really knows what other women want. Women come in different shapes and sizes; so do HydroChic clothes. “And it must resonate”, reasons Daniella, “because we sell all across the globe”. Our goal is that every woman, no matter her age or body shape, her modesty comfort level and her personal style, will be able to find a suitable HydroChic outfit to wear.
Almost all the people involved in HydroChic are female and some are members of the founders own families. Sara and Daniella both have daughters who have modeled for the website and Sara’s Mom is the office manager. On a HydroChic photoshoot, the only man to be seen is one of the photographers. “I think our only male employee is in the warehouse” says Sara. This is a company run by women, for women.
If you have an idea for a product, and you know that it is something that is missing from your own life, Daniella and Sara advise you to go for it! Start small and test everything out yourself. Go to some trade shows, make sure your product is shown around. Reach out to those around you for help and advice but always trust your own instincts. You never know, but you may be the focus of Women’s History Month in the future!
